Let’s Grow
A 4-H school enrichment project
Let’s Grow is an enrichment program for 4th grade students to enhance their study of plants and their importance in fun and imaginative ways. Teams of 2-3 trained Master Gardeners present two hours of instruction with several hands-on and creative activities. The program complements the Fairfax County Program of Studies (POS), teaching kids about plants, from how they grow and reproduce to how they contribute to our environment. Students have fun while learning from experienced gardeners and examining the world of plants in an interactive way. The program concludes with each child planting flower and vegetable seeds to take home, and watch grow into mature plants.
Bringing Let’s Grow to Your School or Organization
The Let’s Grow program is available to interested public and private fourth grade classrooms, 4-H Clubs, and Home School Groups in Fairfax County with children ages 8-11 at no charge. The program enriches their science curriculum and reinforces the concepts taught in the classroom during the hands-on and entertaining presentation.
The kick-off for the Let’s Grow season begins in early January. The program details are available on our website and an informational letter is forwarded by the FCPS Science Coordinator from our county Extension Agency to Elementary School Science leads. Schools and organizations are notified in late February or early March confirming or regretting their participation for the season. Note that the program is limited based on the number of volunteers available.
The program is no longer accepting applications for 2024. Check back next January for 2025 classes.
Impact on our community
Every year our dedicated Master Gardener volunteers perform classroom presentations in as many as 60-100 classrooms throughout Fairfax County. We reach over 2000 students from more than 20 schools and can continue to grow with more volunteers. All Master Gardeners are welcome to participate, and training is provided. The only requirement is a desire to work with children!
